Since he had been to America two years prior to starting school at Winona State University, adapting to college life was not very difficult for Nabih Elteir.
He said he has a lot of female friends. "Maybe it depends on the person. I have seen the girls here treat me better. My best friend is an American girl," he said. "But I have a lot of friends who are from my same country."
He describes an experience he had playing intramural soccer, which caused him to quit the sport altogether. "I have a team, the Middle-Eastern team, just full of international students. I really didn't like the way they [other players] were treating us." He said, "they were making fun of us. We got in a lot of fights. Like mistreatment, like there was different treatment with American students than with us, even from the board, the people who were organizing it."
He said often times he and his team were very intense while playing soccer because they start playing soccer at age 5. "We play aggressive a little bit more than the American students. Sometimes it turns into fights."
"I had a problem last fall," he continued. "One of our friends, by mistake, had broke another players' hand." It was in the first half of the game and his team was ahead, so they were not playing rough. "It was a mistake," he explained.
He said some, but not all, American students stereotype him. "Our team thought it was discrimination. I've seen students making fun of us.
He described the last experience he had with discrimination before quitting intramural soccer. "We were kicked off a soccer game because one of the students came and had a fight with me. The goalie came at me, and at the end of the game we had been kicked out. I have decided not to play soccer anymore. It's a lot of troubles and a lot of stress on me.
Every single semester we get kicked out and people are making fun of us, even if we win. I've seen American students making fun of our language. If I do play soccer, I'm not playing with international students. I would rather be out or play with American students."
